Day 5: The Dawn of a New Era

Activity 1: Translating Phrases
When europeans came to New Zealand they couldn't understand us so. It was hard to settle agreements, also in the treaty of waitangi the maori thought that they were going to own the land but the europeans thought that to. So here are some phrases that I will translate from maori to english then english to maori. Here they are:
Nau mai ki Aotearoa. Welcome to New Zealand
Lilli-Rose is my name, Lilli-Rose ko toku ingoa
What is your name? He aha to ingoa?
He pai taku ki te takaro i te whutupaoro, I like to play rugby.
Where do you come from? no hea koe?

Activity 2: The Treaty of Waitangi
The Treaty of Waitangi was signed on February the 6 1840 at waitangi. I am lucky another to live in the town of were this hapend. Did you know when they signed it the maori and the Europeans thought they were the ones who would have the land because the people who translated were wrong. If I went to waitangi for the day I would:

See the treaty rounds
Go to the museum
Go on the mountain bike park
Go into the marae and see a performance

I think I would rather do Go on the mountain bike park because my friends mum made it.

Bonus Activity: #EarnTheFern
Commonwealth games is something that is competing in lots of activitys like rugby, boxing, netball and hockey. In 2018 it will be held in Astralia, when the commonwealth games were held in Scotland New Zealand got 45 golds. Of of the gold medal winners was called Bill Kini, if I was going to inter view him I would ask him this:

Who was in your team when you played rugby?
Who was your coach?
How much gold medals did you win?
Was it your dream to box?

  1. Kia Ora Lilli-Rose,

My name is Rachel and I am working with Georgia and Dani on the Summer Learning Journey programme this year. It is wonderful to see that you have been so busy learning, creating and sharing your work with us. I particularly enjoyed reading the post from Day #5 above. I was really surprised when I read that you friend's mom had made the Mountain Bike Park in Waitangi. How cool is that?!

I have never tried mountain biking before but I would like to give it a 'go' one day. One of my best friends here in New Zealand is actually a really avid mountain biker. She loves cycling and will often go for long day trips. Do you enjoy biking?

I hope that you and your family are having a really restful and relaxing holiday season. I also hope that you will have time to re-join the journey and post more great activities on your blog soon.

    Miri Kirihimete, Lilli-Rose!

    Best,
    Rachel :)
